about the gallery:
pop obscure gallery is located inside pop obscure records – downtown los angeles’ first dedicated all vinyl record store. located in the fashion district, pop obscure gallery is dedicated to showcasing works of art by established artists as well as up and comers who reflect a standard of excellence. featured works express our own passion for all things music, motorcycle, skate and surf. We hope to encourage a sense of community between creators and collectors in a relaxed environment.
gallery owner & curator: sherry lee
sherry embraced her artistic side at a very early age. painted rocks and glittered pine cones evolved into art & photography classes with mixed media art to published journalistic and commercial pieces. growing up as a record store kid (& being lucky enough to work in one for over a decade) cemented the union of art, photography and music. sherry is currently enjoying her 16th year at freestyle photographic supplies where she is the vice president of operations and actively assists clients with their own pursuits if excellence in creation and output.
a record store for bands that don't exist
it is an art show that mimics a record store – filled with album covers, concert posters and band t-shirts – but everything is created by artist, rohitash rao. each album is hand-made and one-of-a-kind.
rohitash rao on his inspiration for rohit records...
"as a kid, my first love of art came from the bands i was really into and all the art that came with them - their album covers, posters, t-shirts, and of course, their music! record stores were my first art galleries.
this is where ROHIT RECORDS comes from. it’s a tribute to all the record stores i loved growing up - like tower, rhino and music plus (that was the record store near where I grew up in rancho cucamonga.)
as an artist, ROHIT RECORDS is all the things i love all in one place: photography, design, painting, film and comedy (yes, these are supposed to be funny.) all the fake album covers and posters are hand-made and one-of-a-kind.
i started my career in advertising as an art director and then segued into directing commercials and music videos, both in live action and animation. i've co-written and illustrated 7 children's books published by harper collins, created a series of animated shorts for comedy central and created an animated tv pilot for fox produced by lorne michaels. in the past 2 years i’ve had 4 solo shows in the past 2 years in l.a. and in new york. ROHIT RECORDS is my 5th solo show."
